George Karl

So George Karl left the Denver Nuggets today. I have one thing to say about that: coach the Clippers! George Karl turned a team without a true superstar into a monster of a team: meaning 57-25 record, nearly undefeated at home, and the 3rd overall seed in the Western conference. The man has beaten cancer, twice! Karl is a beast in his own way, and definitely a Hall of Fame coach that deserves a serious playoff push. The man has been to the playoffs as much as Phil Jackson, but has never seen a ring.

Now the Clippers, without a head coach, fit the bill perfectly for a 62 year old George Karl. Karl promotes up-tempo, old school style basketball where everyone shares the ball and makes sure to score in the paint. Just that sentence alone should make Chris Paul and Blake Griffin salivate at the mouth because they love that shit. In close scoring is what made "lob city" so desirable in the first place. I even forget to mention that Karl won this years Coach of the Year award (and Denver's still letting him go, what fools!)

George Karl knows how to get the best out of his players. He makes sure they all buy into what's going on, and they play team basketball for 48 minutes. Karl loves using a powerful bench with a multitude of weapons: Andre Miller, Wilson Chandler, JaVale McGee, Corey Brewer. Imagine Karl's excitement when he has the opportunity to coach Jamal Crawford, Eric Bledsoe, and maybe Lamar Odom, Chauncey Billups, and Matt Barnes (and this is just the bench scoring). The powerhouse that is the Los Angeles Clippers would chomp at the bit for a coach like Karl. Both Karl and the Clips found themselves unhappy after the first round of the playoffs this year, hoping to take full advantage of the 2013-2014 campaign. With Chris Paul inevitably signing a long term deal with LA, Karl should fit right in.

With Karl and a revamped Clippers roster, they could go all the way. However, Karl has coached a Denver team that was known for their offensive dominance rather than defense, and defense is definitely where the Clippers are lacking. Caron Butler is not the same small forward he was even a year or two ago, and DeAndre Jordan is not the ace in the hole when it comes to dominant defensive big men. The Clippers are still a few pieces away from a title team, but a strong offseason with a level minded Karl, they should be able to lock in the 3 seed and get out of the first round (Karl's dream).

With all this being said, the Clippers are still looking elsewhere for a coach, and until Lionel Hollins truly does sign a long term deal with Memphis (which I assume he will, there's plenty of promise there for him and his grit-and-grind squad) Lob City will be looking everywhere for their leader-in-a-black-suit.

Congrats Karl, Hall of Fame Coach. If you decide to retire for basketball entirely, I'd understand. But we hope you stay.
